So I have a pair of deer horns mounted on my wall and people either say "Why do you have those?" or "Did Aaron shoot a deer?". Do they know Aaron?? Despite the comments, they are one of my favorite things in my house and here is why. Growing up, my Dad had deer horns, hides, animals, etc all over our house. We even had a toilet paper holder made out of deer horns. I thought all of this was so horrible and vowed to never have such things in my house. Flash forward 10 years and if you pick up a decorating magazine or west elm catalog, they are practically on every page and people are always commenting in the magazines that they are hard to find. I thought this was the funniest thing ever and decided that I deserved a pair because I hated them and made fun of my dad, but they are now in style.
When I visited my Dad at Christmas and asked for a pair, he informed me that one of his dogs had eaten all of his horns and the only pair he had were connected to a deer carcass that he had pulled out of the river. He offered to send the rotting head home with me and had specific instructions on how to remove the flesh, but I declined. If anyone is interested, just send me an email. :) A couple of months later my Dad came through and brought me 3 pair of horns!!
Here is a photo of one of the heads in my Dad's house:
